SCPS OutCross Program
SCPS Outcross Program and Enrollment
(Adding Genetic Diversity)
OUTCROSS PROGRAM ENROLLMENT FORM
-Definitions for the Outcross Program-
- Purebred Scottish Collie: Any registered Scottish Collie that is 87.5% or more Collie.
- Appendix Scottish Collie: Any registered Scottish Collie that is at least 75% Collie, but less than 87.5%; or any registered Scottish Collie that is less than 87.5% Collie and was admitted prior to the 75% requirement.
- Outcross Collie: A dog that is at least 50%, but less than 75% Collie.
-Summary: The SCPS Outcross Program is designed to assist in the maintenance of the health and genetic sustainability of the Scottish Collie breed. The program is carefully regulated to ensure that the breed’s historical temperament, working ability, structure, and physical appearance do not become watered down during the process of adding outside genes.
-Program Objectives:
- Provide a way to utilize the genetic diversity offered by Outcross Collies that do not meet the 75% minimum required for SCPS registration.
- Expand the genetic diversity of the Scottish Collie breed, which will, in turn, improve the health and longevity of the breed and of the individual dogs with which the breed is comprised.
- Decrease the Coefficient of Inbreeding of litters.
- Decrease the Average Genetic Relatedness of the Scottish Collie breed.
- Provide increased education to SCPS breeders on how to breed for sustainability:
- Train breeders how to utilize Better Bred testing, both when planning a breeding, and when picking a puppy to breed in the future.
- Offer mentoring to new breeders.
-Program Core:
- There are two potential situations in which the Outcross Program may be utilized:
- When a member in good standing submits a dog that falls short of the 75% Collie requirement during evaluation, but which is deemed to be at least 50% Collie, according to pedigree, genetic test, and/or the consensus of the members of the Outcross Committee.
- When a member in good standing who owns a purebred Scottish Collie wishes to breed to an Outcross Collie in order to increase genetic diversity, add more drive, reduce the amount of coat, etc.
- In situation 1, as outlined above, the owner of the Outcross Collie must breed to a purebred, genetically compatible Scottish Collie.
- An Outcross Litter Pre-approval Form must be submitted to the Outcross Committee before the breeding takes place, in order to ensure that the breeding will move the next generation closer to the SCPS breed standard.
- Once the breeding takes place, the litter may be advertised by the SCPS, with a clear notation that the puppies will be registered with the Appendix designation.
- The breeder will be strongly encouraged to utilize Better Bred testing to select a keeper puppy or to place puppies in breeding homes, so that the benefit of the outcross genes is not lost.
- In situation 2, as outlined above, the owner of a purebred Scottish Collie may choose to seek genetic diversity and/or other traits to improve the physical type of their line by breeding to an Outcross Collie.
- The breeder will be strongly encouraged to utilize Better Bred testing to select a keeper puppy or to place puppies in breeding homes, so that the benefit of the outcross is not lost.
- The progeny of an outcross breeding, which will be 75% or more Scottish Collie, should ideally be bred to a purebred Scottish Collie. The puppies from such a breeding will be 87.5% or more Collie, and will therefore be registered as purebred.
- All of the guidelines regarding health testing, as outlined in the Code of Ethics, should be followed by a breeder utilizing the Outcross Program – eg., a breeder who has a purebred, female Scottish Collie who carries CEA should be sure that the Outcross Collie he or she has chosen as a stud is clear for CEA.
- An Outcross Collie must be at least 50% Collie. It is strongly preferred that the remaining percentage is comprised of herding breeds, with Border Collie, English Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, and Welsh Sheepdog being most in line with the goals of the SCPS. Other herding breeds may be allowed if less than 20% of the dog’s genetic makeup, and non-herding breeds may be allowed if less than 10% of the dog’s genetic makeup.
Procedure: Applicants for the Outcross Program must submit the following information, along with the Outcross Litter Pre-approval Form:
- Six photos of the Outcross Collie:
- Body profile, right
- Head, front view
- Front, full view
- Body profile, left
- Head, side view
- Rear, full view
- Any pertinent details affecting the conformation or physical appearance of the Outcross Collie (injuries, postpartum, etc.).
- Genetic testing results for the Outcross Collie.
- For the first litter, CEA and MDR1.
- For any subsequent litters, CN, DM and VWD-II.
- Signed note from the owner of the Outcross Collie declaring ownership of the dog and giving permission for the use of the dog in the SCPS Outcross Program.
- Pedigree of the Outcross Collie, if applicable.
- Breed identification test (ie., Embark, Wisdom Panel, etc.), if applicable.
- Better Bred testing results, if applicable.
- Optional: scans or photos of titles awarded to the Outcross Collie.
Further Notes:
- Each outcross breeding will be considered on a case by case basis, and must be approved by the Outcross Committee in advance of the breeding.
- The SCPS will maintain a list of Outcross Collies whose owners have expressed a willingness to participate in the Outcross Program. The owner must follow the procedure as listed above, but instead of an Outcross Litter Pre-approval Form, he or she will submit a simple form containing the owner’s contact information and the Outcross Collie’s name, height, weight, and mix of breeds (if known), along with a statement on why the dog’s temperament, working drive, and/or physical appearance make it a good choice as an outcross.
- Outcross Collies will not receive SCPS breeding certification or a registration number.
- Exception clause: in rare circumstances, the Outcross Committee may choose to overrule the percentage requirements and allow an Appendix Scottish Collie to breed to an Outcross Collie. This decision may be considered in the following situation:
- The particular Appendix Scottish Collie and Outcross Collie in question have been bred previously, and the majority of the offspring demonstrate very good Scottish Collie type and temperament.
- The breeding must otherwise follow the standard procedure as outlined above.
- The puppies will be registered as Appendix Scottish Collies, and will be eligible to apply for breeding certification at 9 months of age.
- The proposed breeding must be submitted to the board by the Outcross Committee and approved or disapproved by majority vote of the board members.
